Web Assignment #2


1.) A daguerrotype is a photograph that was taken using mercury vapor an iodine-sentzitized silvered plate.  The surface of the daguerreotype resembles a mirror because the silvered plate makes it a refection of the image.  The daguerrotype replaced the process of a camera obscurae.  In the 1850's the daguerrotype made its big appearance, and on July 28, 1851 it was the first successful photograph of a Solar Eclipse.

2.) An albumen print is a photography technique started by Louis Désiré Blanquart-Evrad to create a sepia effect to an image.  The main ingredient in an albumen print is egg whites; however, it also uses sodium chloride.  The Albumen processed was popular from 1850-1890, and then started dying out in the early 1890's.

3.) A stereograph is a form of catching a 3D image or being able to give an illusion by showing depth.  This was popular from 1865-1880's.

4.)  A carte de visite is a photograph of someone thats put on a piece of card; generally a small photograph.  They were used for as a 'calling card' which we now consider them a business card.

5.) Matthew Brady and Alexander Gardner were Civil War photographers.  They both are known for using daguerrotype photography.  They were active photographers during the Civil War especially in the 1840's however Alexander Gardner took over Matthew Brady's photography company in the early 1850's due to the fact that Brady's eyesight was deteriorating.
